The Advisory Council sets policy and program requirements.The present members of the Advisory Council include:

- Carolyn Nichol, Chemistry Department; Director of Office of STEM Engagement
- Neal Lane, University Professor (emeritus); Physics & Astronomy Department; Former head of NSF; Former Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy
- Anne Papakonstantinou, Math Department; Director, Rice U School Math Project
- Patricia Reiff, Physics & Astronomy Department; Associate Director for Outreach, Rice Space Institute; Director, The Public Connection
- Carolyn Sumners, Director of Astronomy, Physical Science and Youth Programs, Houston Museum of Natural
Science; Adjunct Professor, Physics & Astronomy; also halftime, Houston

Educational Professionals
At least one Educational Professional will serve on each MST student committee, to ensure the most appropriate course program tailored to the specific needs of the student. These Educational Professionals have agreed to serve on student committees (if an educational professional is desired who is not on this list, the student may petition the Advisory Council):
